Vieux Carre: Boundaries: Mississippi River to Canal, Esplanade to N. Rampart
It is the oldest neighborhood in the city with some buildings dating back to 1803. There is French, but mostly Spanish influence in architecture, which can be seen in the ornate wrought iron balconies. Several architectural styles are represented, but most notably early 19th century townhomes. Some have been converted to condos, but some remain single family homes. It is America's most European city.
